Why We Buy Products We Hate
Love it or hate it, shopping is something we all do from time to time. And what I've realized over the years is that I put a lot of thought into something I'm buying for someone else. I want to make sure the gift is something they'll use; something that has value to them.
But, I can't tell you how many times I've shopped for myself just to unpack my bags and ask, "why did I buy this?" And, I'm not talking about another pair of shoes or an outfit I really don't need.
I'm talking about the items we use every day like laundry detergent, hand soap, and yes, even beauty products. So, why do we keep buying products we hate?
1. We buy out of habit
For starters, we're creatures of habit. We buy the same things because, well, we always buy the same things. Maybe we bought that detergent not because we love it, but because our parent's do.
Here's the problem: We usually buy out of habit when we shop in a rush and don't have time to think about our purchases. Unfortunately, it's what leads to buyer's remorse when we get home.
2. We want to save money
To save a few bucks, we'll pick up the store brand or what's on sale. There's nothing wrong with saving money, right?
Here's the problem: What happens when the product we buy doesn't work as well as the product we really wanted? We eventually stop using it and end up spending more money to buy what we really wanted in the first place.
3. Everyone else is doing it
Guilty. Even as adults it's easy to buy things we've seen on Facebook or TV because it seems like everyone else is trying it and loving it but us. And, who wants to feel left out?
Here's the problem: Just like buying something out of habit, we don't put a lot of thought into purchasing something someone else likes, because we think if they love it, we will too. But, what if we don't?
So, how do we start buying the products we LOVE?
Think about the products you have you KNOW you love, like a favorite pair of jeans.
You know those jeans are perfect for you, because they fit every curve perfectly. You know this because you've tried on a hundred other pairs that didn't. But these jeans? They make you feel fabulous! Maybe they cost a little more than you cared to spend for a pair of jeans, but, sometimes it's not about money, it was worth the cost because they met all of your needs.
They're more like an investment.
We need to start looking at our makeup and skin care purchases in the same way. When you live with problem and sensitive skin, you need a "perfect fit" to meet the special needs of your skin. You want it to make your skin look and feel just as fabulous!
Investing in good-for-your-skin makeup makes better sense. You'll outwear those jeans quicker than you'll outwear your skin!
