oilbottlesWhen it comes to skincare, the word “oil” scares people, especially for those with excessive oily skin. They associate the word “oil” with “bad”.

But, here’s the thing. Oil is not your enemy.

Forget what you think you know about oil and your skin. Truth is, our skin must have an oil balance to stay healthy, happy and younger looking.

But yet, women go to extremes to rid their skin of oil at all costs. And what they don’t understand, is when they do this, they strip their skin of healthy, natural oils.

When the skin is stripped, it goes into panic mode, and compensates by creating even more oil, and this is what clogs pores, causes acne and leads to a host of other skin issues. Yikes!

So, how do you know you’re getting the right oil balance for your skin?

Get to know your skin type

You’re probably thinking, “That’s easy! I already know my skin type”. But do you really? Just because you had oily skin when you were 16, doesn’t necessarily mean you have oily skin today.

In fact, it’s not uncommon to have 3 different skin types throughout your lifetime.

Why? Because as we get older, our skin naturally loses the ability to create moisture. When this happens, we have to compensate by using the right facial products to restore moisture to our skin.

If you’re not so sure what your skin type is, no worries! There’s a simple way to find out for sure.

All you need to do is wash your face first thing in the morning. Don’t exercise or do anything that might make you sweat. Also do your best not to touch your face. After 2 hours, take a good look at your skin in the mirror.

If it feels clean, but not tight, and if you don’t notice any shine, then your skin is normal. If it feels dry and tight, and you don’t see any shine, your skin is dry. If your skin looks oily on your forehead and nose, but looks and feels dry on your cheeks, you have combination skin, and finally, if it looks oily everywhere, you’ve got oily skin.

Now that you know your skin type today, you need to be sure the skincare products you’re using are right for that type, and you’ll then be able to create that perfect oil balance.
