I have a confession to make. I’m a makeup addict, and truth been told, have been since the age of 16. I had to try anything and everything (do you relate?) as soon as I could get my hands on it, and the addiction nearly bankrupted me.
So, what’s a girl to do? Sell it!
And that I did! I sold Avon, Mary Kay and Beauticontrol, all the while watching others roll their eyes, telling me makeup was vain and pretentious; nothing more. And you know what? I began to feel the same way.
And, after a while, it just wasn’t fun anymore. I wanted my job to mean something; I wanted to help people; to make a difference in the world. But, could makeup really do that?
An obsession really never dies, so I eventually “fell off the wagon” to create KmS Mineral Essentials, but not before my skin completely turned on me like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It’s like I woke up one day with someone else’s face; there were breakouts everywhere!
It just didn’t make sense. And the funny thing? I was wearing mineral makeup at the time. You know the one. I admit it. The late night infomercial sucked me in. It was “natural makeup.” I figured I had nothing to lose. That of course was when the breakouts came knocking.
After doing a little research, I found other women just like me dying to wear this new makeup but couldn’t. Although their skin wasn’t sensitive, there was something in the makeup that wreaked havoc with their skin. And more importantly, I was reminded there are even more women out there with sensitive and problem skin that couldn’t wear any makeup at all. If you’re one of them you know it can really do a number on your self confidence. I just had to help.
If you’ve ever started a business from scratch, you know it’s not always as fun as you thought it would be. It’s a serious learning curve; you can’t get around it. (If you’ve been with us from the very beginning, you’ve witnessed our bumps, bruises and growing pains.) I have to be honest here. There were many times during the 1st 4 years I wanted to throw in the towel.
You want to know something pretty amazing? It was always at that very moment of discouragement I’d get a personal email or phone call from a customer saying things like, “thank you for coming out with a makeup I can finally wear”, “I never thought my skin would ever look this good”, or even “I don’t know what I would do if you stopped selling your makeup.” I was and still am very humbled my customers want to share their very personal skin struggles with me, and it’s these very stories that confirm what I already knew; that a little bit of makeup really can change the world, even if it’s one face at a time.
Sure, every now and again I get an occasional eye roll when asked what I do. Know what? After connecting with so many amazing women all over the world, I can’t imagine doing anything else.
