Back in the day, my parent’s were big into vitamin supplements. While all my friends got to eat the yummy Flinstones Chew-ables, I had to settle with a handful of yucky, smelly (I still remember that smell; uggh!) pills that were SO HUGE, I was sure I’d choke! I remember one in particular was about the size of a nickel, and as far as mom was concerned, taking it was non-negotiable. You guessed it; Vitamin C.
I still take Vitamin C, and thank goodness now-a-days it’s much smaller in size! About 5 years ago, I also added this incredible vitamin to my skincare routine to later find out that Vitamin-C also known as Ascorbic Acid isn’t enough.
I recently read an eye-opening article written by Celebrity Dermatologist Nicolas Perricone that discusses the drawbacks of Ascorbic Acid when used on the skin.
ASCORBIC ACID VS. VITAMIN C-ESTER
Straight up Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) used alone is water soluble, and cannot protect the skin cell membranes. It can also cause irritation for those with sensitive skin. Vitamin C-Ester on the other hand is fat soluble, and is used at its full potential as an anti-aging ingredient. Vitamin C-Ester delivers 8 times higher levels of Vitamin-C activity when compared to its counterpart. In addition, Vitamin C-Ester has the amazing ability to stimulate the skin cell growth that produces collagen and elastin, tissue stands that make the skin strong and flexible.
So, am I saying that Ascorbic Acid should be avoided when choosing an anti-aging supplement? Not at all. But, if you are looking for a product to give you the full potential of Vitamin C (and why wouldn’t you) look for it in conjunction with Vitamin-C Ester like KmS Skin Essentials Vita-C Synergy Serum. This serum combines a high concentration of Vitamin C- Esters, Vitamin E and natural extracts to create a synergenic blend that works to fight the skin’s daily exposure to free radicals, sun damage and aging.
